Unbound Dance Day Summer 2023

Following the success of Unbound Dance Day in 2022, McNicol Ballet Collective returns with its second edition of on-stage ballet workshops and masterclasses.

“It’s a really different style of ballet to what I’m used to so it’s definitely broadened my knowledge of what ballet can be” Unbound Dance Day Participant

This day of dance exploration will start with a company class led by former Birmingham Royal Ballet Soloist Kristen McGarrity, accompanied by the UK’s foremost dance pianist David Plumpton. The class will be followed by masterclasses from McNicol Ballet Collective’s artistic director Andrew McNicol focused on nurturing creativity and working with a choreographer. Former guest artist with English National Ballet Winnie Dias, will lead the second masterclass based on exploring MBC’s latest repertoire.

The day will conclude with an exclusive open rehearsal of the company’s upcoming performances at HNT (23 & 24 June) and a chance to quiz the dancers with a Q&A.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from leading industry professionals and to experience an inspiring day of dance exploration on Hull New Theatre’s main stage.

Suitable for dancers aged 14+ with previous experience in ballet.

Unbound Day of Dance

Join internationally acclaimed company McNicol Ballet Collective for a day of dance masterclasses and workshops at Hull New Theatre.

The day will begin with a professional class on stage with members of the company, led by former Birmingham Royal Ballet soloist Kristen McGarrity and accompanied live by one of the UKs foremost dance accompanists, pianist David Plumpton. Participants will then take part in a workshop led by Artistic Director Andrew McNicol, to learn some of the company’s bold and exciting repertoire.

In the afternoon, choreographer and teacher Bim Malcomson will lead a creative ballet masterclass for participants and company dancers. The day will end with a chance to observe a working rehearsal and a Q&A with the full company.

Unbound Dance Day has been designed for anyone aged 14+ with some previous experience in ballet. Please bring plenty of water and something for lunch, and get ready for this unmissable opportunity.

Awakenings is the debut programme of world premiere ballets by choreographer Andrew McNicol.

These four exciting contemporary ballets have all been inspired by musical composition. The evening includes a brand-new reimagined version of Firebird which will be performed in what is the 50th anniversary since Stravinsky’s death.

Awakenings will also feature Of Silence, an exploration of hope, connection and belonging performed to and inspired by the music of Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. Set to an original, specially commissioned score by Nicholas Thayer and Setareh Nafisi, In Ecstasy is a choreographic and musical response to the progressive, eccentric composer Alexander Scribin. Completing the programme is Bates Beats an energetic, exuberant work conceived to showcase the power, excellence and individuality of the McNicol Ballet Collective’s incredible dancers, set to a pulsating soundtrack by American composer Mason Bates.

The cast for Awakenings includes Winnie Dias, Shevelle Dynott, Marina Fraser, Kristen McGarrity, Joshua McSherry-Gray and Laurie McSherry-Gray.
