Nikki Rummer - Unbroken

Absolutely Cultured is proud to present an evening of physical performance in partnership with the University of Hull.

The event is part of a series of pilots over the next year, which aim to offer more opportunities to experience dance and physical performance in Hull.

Acting as a double bill, each evening features two shows; “Triptych” by Hull-based artist Kristin McGuire and “Unbroken” by Nikki Rummer, one half of duo Nikki & JD.

“Triptych” is a series of three short choreographies that explore pole dance as an art form, which requires a great deal of sensuality, physical strength, balletic elegance and gymnastic grace. The performance incorporates mapped projections that evolve as the dance progresses across the performance area.

This piece is performed by Kristin McGuire whose professional dance career spans more than 20 years of performing and choreographing for an eclectic range of international dance and theatre companies, including Cirque du Soleil and Mark Bruce Company

“Unbroken” is the debut solo performance by physical theatre and circus artist, Nikki Rummer, on tour in autumn 2021 and spring 2022. One bittersweet Christmas, three generations of the Rummer family are summoned home for one last gathering. Combining her talent for storytelling and her unique movement language inspired by her acrobatics, gymnastics and capoeira practice, Rummer tells a very personal story with universal resonance.

There will be a post-show artist talk following the second night performance, featuring both Nikki Rummer and Kristin McGuire, along with Absolutely Cultured’s CEO and Artistic Director, Stephen Munn. Tickets for 1 June automatically include access to this post-show talk and both the performance and talk will be BSL interpreted on this evening.

To shape future pilot projects, audiences will be invited to share their views and feedback on their experience of the show.

Friday Nights Live: Unbroken by Nikki Rummer

Unbroken is the debut solo performance by physical theatre and circus artist, Nikki Rummer.

One bittersweet Christmas, three generations of the Rummer family are summoned home for one last gathering. Told through the eyes of a daughter, Unbroken weaves fragments of memories into the body of one performer as a dark, previously buried secret finds its way to the surface.

Combining her talent for storytelling and her unique movement language inspired by her acrobatics, gymnastics and capoeira practice, Nikki tells a very personal story with universal resonance.

About Nikki Rummer

Nikki is one half of the duo Nikki & JD whose show Knot has toured extensively nationally and internationally since 2016, including an award-winning Edinburgh Fringe run.

Nikki was born in the USA and trained in Washington State and at National Centre for Circus Arts (NCCA) in London.

This is Nikki’s first solo work.

About Unbroken

The work features powerful acrobatics and is very physical, theatrical and uses storytelling throughout. It is narrated live by Nikki, who is the solo performer.

Overall, the show is very warm with its themes of family and home. However, there are some darker moments when some emotionally hard hitting family secrets are revealed.

This is a very personal work for Nikki who has drawn on inspiration from her own family life.

There is some use of religious imagery in the show. For example, the opening scene resembles Leonardi Da Vinci’s famous painting of The Last Supper.
